Due to its high incidence, the large group of 150 musculoskeletal and connective tissue diseases represents a public health problem in Slovenia. Such diseases limit mobility and dexterity, which leads to absence from work, early retirement, lower level of well-being, and reduced ability to participate in society. The COVID-19 pandemic has had a negative impact on the condition of patients with such diseases. With the present retrospective observational
study, we analyzed all hospital admissions for musculoskeletal and connective tissue diseases in Slovenia in the period between 2016 and 2022. The results of the analysis showed that between 2016 and 2019, the average annual rate of hospital admissions was 10.8 per 1,000 inhabitants, with a sharp decline observed in 2020 and 2021. In 2020, the rate was 8.3, and in 2021, it was 7.9 per 1,000 inhabitants. Osteoarthritis of the hip and arthrosis of the knee were the most common causes of hospitalization due to musculoskeletal and connective tissue diseases during the observed period. The decline in the number of hospital admissions is very likely the result of various restrictive measures related to the COVID-19 pandemic.
