Motivational interviewing is a counselling style designed to elicit individual’s motivation for change. As the use of motivational interviewing is recommended in health care, it is necessary to provide students of health sciences with adequate training in how to conduct motivational interviewing. The aim of the literature review was to determine the effects of training students of health sciences in motivational interviewing. In the final review, we included 10 studies carried out on students of different healthcare
sciences, exploring the effects of motivational interviewing training. We have found that short motivational interviewing training sessions for students of different healthcare disciplines improve their theoretical knowledge, basic skills, and confidence to conduct motivational interviewing. This type of training is well accepted by students and relevant for them, but the effects on the population of healthcare professionals should be researched in the future. Standardization of assessment protocols is needed to facilitate the comparability and generalizability of research results.
