Abstract

The use of photographs and video recordings of injury cases in first aid training courses can have adverse implications on individuals. Extreme forms of such a response are fear of blood and fear of injury. Our aim was to find out how training participants experience photographs and video recordings of wounds and fractures, and what experiences lecturers have
in terms of using such didactic materials. We created a PowerPoint presentation on first aid for wounds and injuries of bones and joints, which was used by lecturers at 10 first aid training classes held in various cities across Slovenia. At the end of the training, 229 participants completed a short questionnaire on the presentation. At the same time, we conducted partially structured interviews with 9 first aid lecturers. The participants feel less discomfort when looking at drawings than when looking at colour photographs or video recordings of injuries. Lecturers have diverse experience with the use of photographs and video recordings of injuries In first aid training courses, consecutive use of drawings, photographs and video recordings is advisable, and the participants must be prepared in advance for demonstrations of real-life cases of injuries.
