Abstract

Due to their high incidence, diseases of the musculoskeletal system and connective tissue represent an economic burden on society and a growing public health problem. These diseases are treated with various medicines, the consumption of which says a lot about the health, economic and social characteristics of these diseases; knowledge of the use of medicines is crucial when planning the allocation of financial resources. The purpose of the present study was to assess the consumption of medicines for the treatment of musculoskeletal diseases and their economic value in the period from 2010 to 2018 in Slovenia. Therefore, a retrospective observational study was performed to assess the prescription and consumption of medicines. The consumption of these medicines in Slovenia increased in that period, although fewer prescriptions were prescribed for these diseases. The consumption of medicines from the group of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory and anti-rheumatic medicines, and medicines for the treatment of gout increased the most. In 2018, around 1.2 million prescriptions, worth almost €17.4 million, were issued, which represents a significant contribution to the economic burden of these diseases.
