Prevention of Deep Vein Thrombosis and Pulmonary Embolism in Arthroscopic Orthopaedic Surgery

The prevention of deep vein thrombosis in arthroscopic orthopaedic surgery depends on each individual, since the decision to introduce preventive measures for complications, such as deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism after these operations, is influenced by many factors that must be taken into account when treating such patients. The study was based on the method of quantitative research. The instrument for data collection included data on the patient, the operation, as well as on the complications and measures after the operation. The study included 610 patients undergoing arthroscopic orthopaedic knee surgery with meniscus and/or cartilage repair. Complications after surgery occurred very rarely (1% of the patients analysed). The study showed that the use of low molecular weight heparin (dalteparin) and the individual assessment of the operated patient according to the Caprini score, taking into account additional factors, are very useful and effective measures for the prevention of deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism after arthroscopic knee surgery. It is also important to educate the patient about the operation and possible postoperative complications.
