Abstract

Sleep is one of the basic human needs and is essential for stable physical and psychological health. Critically ill patients in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) tend to be sleep deprived. The presence of pain, anxiety, medication administration, performance of procedures, noise, light, and acute illness all contribute to a reduction in the quality and quantity of sleep in hospitalised patients. The aim of this article is to find out and describe the most commonly presented scales in literature to assess sleep in critically ill ICU patients. We used a descriptive work method with a systematic review of the literature. We included 9 articles in the final analysis. We found that the most frequently mentioned observational scales were the Richards Campbell Sleep Questionnaire, the Verran and Snyder-Halpern sleep scale, and the Sleep Questionnaire in the ICU. We believe that in Slovenia there is a need for greater awareness of the importance of sleep in critically ill patients in the ICU and for additional knowledge about sleep and assessment scales that nurses can use to subjectively assess patients’ sleep. With this article, we aim to improve the knowledge of healthcare workers and improve the quality of sleep of critically ill patients in the ICU.
