Abstract

The article discusses issues related to the treatment of chronic venous insufficiency from the perspective of a family medicine specialist. Out of 628 outpatients included in the study, 41.7 per cent used one of possible treatments, with 3 per cent resorting to varicose vein surgery, 3.5 per cent of the patients taking venoactive medications, and 10 per cent opting for sclerotherapy, while 13 per cent of the patients were treated with elastic compression bandages. The article examines the possible causes of treatment found in patients with varicose veins. Drug treatment does not remove varicose veins and aesthetic issues are not
dealt with either. Sclerotherapy is suitable for fighting spider (teleangiectasy) and reticular varicose veins. The treatment often takes a long time, and the majority of patients are not in favour of surgical treatment. On the other hand, when pathological changes are limited to macrocirculation and subjective problems are fairly mild, varicose veins patients, notably the elderly, are more interested in other »big« diseases.
