The Importance of Health in Integrating Older People into Lifelong Learning in Nursing Homes

Modern society is getting older. We have not yet dealt with such a challenge in the past. There are more and more young-old people, full of energy who have set other priorities as their goal in the time of retirement: they travel around the world, actively engage in sports (yoga, fitness, cycling, etc.), have many hobbies, engage in cultural activities, learn foreign languages, etc. For the research, we used a descriptive analysis and a causal-non-experimental method of empirical pedagogical research. The survey included older people in all nursing homes in Pomurje, aged over 65 years. The research sample included 390 older people residing in nursing homes, whereby the entire population was 906. In the research, we focused primarily on the state of health as a key dispositional barrier to the engagement of older people in lifelong learning. The results of the research showed that there are statistically significant differences in the assessment of health and other factors of involvement of older people in lifelong learning in nursing homes, as well as in the assessment of health of the surveyed older people given the frequency of their involvement in lifelong learning. Additionally, there is a significant correlation between poor health and involvement in lifelong learning, from which it can be summarised that with the deterioration of health, older people’s dependence from the environment increases and that health importantly influences their involvement in activities (lifelong learning) organised in nursing homes for older people.
