Biopsychosocial Management of Migraine
Keywords:
migraine, chronic migraine, psychosocial factors, biopsychosocial approachAbstract
Biopsychosocial model takes into account the connection between the physical, psychological and social responses. Knowledge about the neurophysiological functioning of the brain structures influencing headache has increased. The limbicdiencephalic structures and the cerebral cortex are important. The subcortical structures influence the pain modulating system in the brainstem that in turn regulates the trigeminocervical system. The activity of the trigeminocervical system causes a change in the activity of the intracranial arteries. A peptide related to the gene for calcitonin (CGRP) is important. Psychosocial factors work through the cognitive-affective system. Social situations cause social stress. The social integration processes of inclusion and exclusion are key to wellbeing. Psychological responses are related to cognitive processing and emotional states, such as anxiety, depression and anger. The treatment is focused on managing stress management with cognitive learning and curing of emotional disturbances. In migraine treatment, it is essential to combine the pharmacological treatment, complementary techniques and modification of the psychosocial states.
