Abstract

Many working adults and students spend a lot of time sitting every day. Prolonged sitting has negative effects on the muscular-skeletal system and health. Many countries have adopted recommendations to reduce sitting behaviour. The aim of the study was to identify longer periods of sitting and to develop strategies to reduce sedentary activity. Data collection was carried out with an adapted questionnaire on sedentary behaviour (Sedentary Behaviour Questionnaire) in October and November 2016, 2017 and 2018. The quantitative study involved 219 high school and college students and 583 adult workers. The average daily duration of the students’ sedentary activity was more than 13 hours. The results show that sedentary behaviour among working adults was highest among office workers, between 10 and 11 hours. Active breaks and walking the steps at work are the most frequently chosen strategies to reduce the lack of exercise. The participants perceived sedentary activity as a problem. Sitting working hours are difficult to reduce. In order to reduce the sedentary time, it is necessary to focus on changing the individual sitting habits and to provide national recommendations for reducing sedentary activity.
