Gender Incongruence
Keywords:
gender, sex, gender incongruenceAbstract
Since we live in a mostly stereotypical world, we dare to claim that women pay much more attention to their appearance than men and are not satisfied with certain details on their bodies, although this is definitely not true. Most men nowadays openly admit that they spend as much time when it comes to taking care of their appearance as women do. However, there is a big difference between general dissatisfaction with our appearance or with certain details about ourselves that make us who we are, and a gender dysphoria. Gender dysphoria is a state of constant dissatisfaction. The aim of this paper is to show the difference between gender and sex, to clarify the concept of gender dysphoria, to present facts and aspects of gender adaptation (regardless of feminisation or masculinisation of the body), and to show (illustrate) the amount of problems that patients with the diagnosis of gender dysphoria are confronted with. This paper was written in the hope of taking even a small step forward in informing both the scientific community and the rest of the population about the presence of gender nonconformism in contemporary society.
