Abstract

Musculoskeletal and connective tissue diseases are a growing public health problem and an economic burden on society and health systems. These diseases are treated with various medicines, the consumption of which is monitored, as it is a valuable source of information about the health, economic and social characteristics of the diseases. The purpose of our research was to assess the consumption of medicines for the treatment of musculoskeletal and connective tissue diseases and their economic value in Slovenia in the period from 2016 to 2020, when the Covid-19 pandemic occurred. The retrospective observational study that was conducted showed an increased consumption of the observed medicines. According to pharmacological groups, the consumption of medicines with an effect on bone structure, mineralization, and medicines for the treatment of gout increased the most. The total value of medicines in EUR increased, the number of prescriptions decreased, a sharp decline was seen in 2020. In the first year of the pandemic, the consumption of medicines for musculoskeletal and connective tissue diseases
increased and the number of prescriptions decreased in Slovenia.
