Abstract

Laboratory diagnostics is a medical discipline with an important role in providing the comprehensive treatment of patients. Through the last ten years, the development of laboratory services has been directed towards the enhancement of quality, because both the doctor and the patient expect a high level of service. Doctors, medical (nursing) personnel, and laboratory personnel are all included into a comprehensive treatment of patients. The treatment circle starts and ends with the patient who needs a diagnosis and the appropriate health treatment. Each participant in this circle has their own impact on the quality of laboratory results. The mission of any medical laboratory is the right results for the right patient at the right time. Laboratory tests are taking part in defining the health treatment, and support the risk evaluation for the development of a certain disease. Therefore, a high level of trust by doctors in laboratory results is important. The laboratory medicine adapted to the patient represents a new approach in treating patients. We are facing more and more financial constraints. Therefore, well-planned organisational changes of the healthcare system are urgent. When everyone does everything in their specific area of expertise, the quality comprehensive treatment and satisfaction of patients shall be secured.
