Abstract

Sensory integration is an innate neurobiological process and refers to the integration and interpretation of sensory stimulation from the environment, including balance and touch. Critical period for its development is the early childhood when the brain is the most receptive, flexible and capable of organisation. The aim of the article is to determine the relation between the child’s movement activities and the development of balance sense and the sense of touch in preschool population. The questionnaire
“Vprašalnik o otrokovi predelavi senzornih prilivov” was used in the empirical part. The sample consisted of 90 children in the age group from four to five years, 42 girls and 48 boys. The data obtained were processed with a descriptive and analytical research method, and the independent samples t-test. The findings indicate that there are no statistically significant differences according to gender and between the groups with different time devoted to physical activities in the majority of categories, dealing with processing the vestibular incoming sensations. A statistically important difference among the two groups was noted in the influence of physical activities on processing tactile sensations. It is suggested that future research should also include children with special needs, comparing the results of the two populations.
