Online Weight-Loss Diaries on Obesity

In recent years, obesity has received a lot of public, media and academic attention. The internet has become a key source of weight-loss information and advice. In recent years, weight-loss online diaries, published in online news media, blogs or forums have become very popular; yet there has been little research on investigating these diaries. We tried to find out how Slovenian weight-loss online diaries represent obesity. A critical discourse analysis (an analysis of strategies, macro-proposition and key
words) of four Slovenian weight-loss online diaries was conducted. Research has shown that weight-loss online diaries represented obesity in the framework of the dominant obesity discourse: the individual is primarily responsible for their lifestyle; obesity is caused by inactivity and poor diet. The so-called “obese people” have been represented within the moral (obese people are “lazy”) and emotional (obese people are “unhappy”) discourses and stereotyped as being “unhealthy”.
