Theoretical Bases and Research Possibilities Using the Work Ability Index

The current changes in demographic structure of the world population require several essential adjustments in ways of thinking and acting when it comes to retirement, especially in cases of early retirement in older employees. Taking measures for improving the work abilities of employees would enable the establishment of working conditions, which could lead to a decrease in the number of members of the active population who retire too early. Work abilities are factors enabling the employee to perform successfully in certain tasks. The Work Ability Index (WAI) helps us determine whether the work abilities of an individual are poor, moderate or excellent. Despite the fact that numerous studies have been made with the concept of the WAI, several questions remain opened, and could be answered with additional research in the field of work abilities of the active population regardless of chronological age.
