Change in Dietary Habits of Patients with Chronic Renal Failure Following the Treatment of Vesicoureteral Reflux and Renal Transplantation

Serious conditions like kidney failure and kidney transplantation require lifestyle changes as well as changes in dietary habits. Between the years 2002 and 2014, 18 patients with chronic renal failure and vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) grade III-V were treated with implantation of autologous cultured cartilage cells at the University Medical Centre Ljubljana to treat or downgrade VUR. After a successful reduction of VUR, kidney transplantation was performed. We invited 14 patients to participate in the research, and sent them questionnaires which, among other, also contained questions about their lifestyle and dietary habits. 10 patients responded to the survey. The paper presents the results of the research, referring to patients’ dietary habits. From the responses we could establish that patients have good dietary habits. All but one reported a change in their dietary habits and lifestyle after treatment in terms of higher intake of fruits and vegetables, lower intake of salty and fatty food, and more physical activities. They pay attention on the intake of liquid and food ingredients, especially potassium, fat, and cholesterol. As compared to the general population, these patients are more aware of a healthy diet, which results from a thorough health education of patients following kidney transplantation.
