Changes in Nursing Care Work in Slovenia and Characteristics of Late Modernity

In the late modernity, work has changed radically. The article tries to answer the question, what changes in nursing care work have occurred in recent decades in the light of the concept of late modernity, such as post-Fordism, post-industrialism, and post-materialism. In the autumn of 2015, in-depth interviews with 12 nursing care providers were carried out. The results indicate that post-Fordism is manifested in nursing care as the flexibilisation of work and considering the needs of patients and their relatives. Despite the fact that interviewees had a permanent employment contracts, they reported about their precarious work which is primarily based on low payment and heavy workload. Post-industrialism is reflected in the use of various specialised knowledge and communication technologies to communicate with patients and members of the healthcare team, and to transfer the knowledge to other individuals in the context of health promotion. Post-materialism is evident in personal engagement, adjustments to situations, in self-maintenance, and in constant individual reflexivity. Post-materialistic trends are also reflected in the demands for quick and quality nursing care services.
