Abstract

Violence in health care is increasing. Due to the nature of working with patients, the professional group of healthcare providers is one of the most exposed groups among healthcare professionals. Patients with a mental disorder are those who most often commit acts of violence, directed at employees, due to their disregard of their medical condition. The research was aimed at determining the use of tools to prevent violent behaviour in patients with a mental disorder in individual wards. We used a quantitative research method and a survey. Data were collected by means of a questionnaire prepared on the basis of a scientific and professional literature review. 250 nursing practitioners were included in the survey. An analysis of 142 questionnaires (56.8% sample realization) revealed that nursing care providers use de-escalation communication techniques equally frequently, regardless of their ward (t = 0.929, p = 0.354), while the BVC Rating Scale of Violent Behaviour is statistically significantly more frequent in the ward under special supervision (t = 4.339, p = 0.000). As both tools are most effective in preventing violent behaviour in patients with a mental disorder, it is essential that nursing care providers know them well and know how to use them. While they need knowledge and experience, they must also be aware of their own limitations.
