Abstract

Healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) are the cause of increased morbidity and mortality, thus prolonging and raising the cost of treatment. Our goal was to identify the most important components of the education model for nurses/technicians and nursing students on HAI prevention through a literature review. We conducted the research by systematically reviewing 18 articles in 5 scientific databases. By coding the results, we obtained the category ‟Main components of the education model for nursing students and nurses/technicians on the prevention of healthcare-associated infectionsˮ, and six subcategories. We can conclude that a successful model of education on the prevention and control of HAI in health care should contain six main components: education with an emphasis on linking theory and practice and monitoring progress; continuity in education; development and/or revision of new models, curricula, education plans and programs; use of different education methods; education based on professional competencies; the need for a national education program. Implementation of the model depends on the individual, local and national level of support.
